HARRISON ELAM

Cobble Hill-born artist Harrison Elam questions notions of personal desire, affection, guilt, and power by referencing rural customs and symbology inherited during his adolescence. His multimedia installations of regionally specific sculptural, two-dimensional, and kinetic works establish spatial tension and generate visceral resonance. Each work is composed to elicit a transgressive questioning of dominant yet fragile understandings of care, gender, and self-expression. Materially, these works draw upon the relationship between inherent frigidity and the imbued tenderness found in his visual language, highlighting a complex balance of restriction and indulgence.
