Gunel Akhundova is a Third Culture Kid whose experience of living across Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Romania, and Canada has profoundly shaped her artistic practice. Navigating diverse environments has shaped her perspective far beyond the boundaries of a single passport, inspiring her to explore the themes of belonging, cultural fluidity, and identity. These concepts emerge naturally in her artwork, reflecting a world that is interconnected and richly diverse.
Akhundova uses storytelling as a central element of her mixed-media artworks, weaving together memory, heritage, and personal history. Through the integration of significant objects and iconography, her work creates a dialogue between the past and present, questioning what it means to belong. Her artworks often explore the idea of home and the feelings that come with losing loved ones, moving away from family and friends, and navigating your adulthood when it feels as though you haven’t fully let go of your childhood.
